Dice grip advice

17 July 2008

By Frank Scoblete

Dear Frank:

I have been using the tong grip with some success (depending on the day, SRR between 7-11). Read Frank's book, changed my grip to three-finger grip, I'm able to hit a couple of points, but now my SRR is way too low. Any suggestions.

I play in Tunica when I can. I am a high school coach.

Kevin

Dear Kevin:

Since I don't know how many rolls you have in with the "tong grip" or the "three-finger grip" I can't really say whether your casino SRR (seven to rolls ratio - 1:6 is random) of 1:7 to 1:11 means anything substantial. I can say that if you really have such a high edge over the house with the "tong grip," the money should be rolling in. It is rare to see SRRs in the 1:11 range. That would indicate a truly elite player.

Given that, overall the three-finger grip is the preferred grip. You have more stability in your throw and there is much less of a chance of the dice doing their own thing after they hit the back wall.

What dice set do you use? With the three-fingered grip the hardways set seems to be the best for most shooters; followed by the 3V set. However, the 3V opens you up to more sevens if your axis control is lacking.

You should be practicing at home at least a few times a week to lock in the muscle memory. You might also consider using chips to simulate a casino game. Build or buy a throwing and receiving station (http://www.goldentouchcraps.com/rigs.shtml). This will allow you to get the feel for how those dice bounce off the back wall.

For your excellent letter I am giving you a free 10-day subscription to my private, members-only website at www.goldentouchcraps.com. We have over 5,000 members on this site and you will find the conversations lively, intelligent and fun. You can also ask and discuss all aspects of craps and any other casino game on this private site.

Enjoy!

All the best in and out of the casinos!
