Phoenix airport casino plans abandoned

ARIZONA – As reported by the Arizona Republic: "So much for slot machines at the airport.

"Facing stiff opposition from Native American tribes, Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon said Tuesday he would abandon the idea of bringing gaming to Sky Harbor International Airport.

"In a letter to Maricopa County's tribes, Gordon pledged not to pursue the proposal. Tribal leaders worried that the move would lead to the legalization of gambling at Arizona racetracks and bars, cannibalizing their gambling revenue.

"…Gordon floated the slot-machine idea as one proposal to shore up Phoenix's revenue, which has declined sharply in the weak economy…"
