GALVESTON ISLAND, Texas -- As reported by KTRH News Radio: "A group of business owners on Galveston Island calls for legalized gambling as a way to recover from Hurricane Ike. The group has sent a letter to Mayor Lyda Ann Thomas asking her to push for the legalization of gambling and the construction of resorts. Advocates for legalized gambling say casinos would generate jobs and revenue.
"'You're going to have to have a lot of employees to run that size of a facility because you're talking about a resort, not just a casino,' says Paul Cannon, an attorney from Houston who runs the web site legalizetexasgambling.com.
"Cannon says the state could regulate gambling by restricting the number of casinos that can be built and limiting construction to projects that would also generate revenue from other forms of entertainment.
