INDIO, California -- (PRESS RELEASE) -- With the goal of offsetting the mounting costs of attending college, the Cabazon Band of Mission Indians has teamed with the East Valley Tourist Development Authority (EVTDA) to offer a scholarship fund for Coachella Valley Students.
The scholarship money is intended to help bridge the financial shortfall of students planning to attend any two or four-year accredited university or college.
Candidates must either be immediate family members of the Cabazon Band of Mission Indians and/or immediate family members of employees of Fantasy Springs Resort Casino.
Cabazon Band of Mission Indians Chairman, Douglas Welmas, said, “We are truly excited about this new educational resource that will focus on bringing financial assistance to our Native-American family members and extended family of employees working here at the resort. For too long, Native-Americans have lagged behind most other Americans in securing a formal education and I see the EVTDA Scholarship Fund as a fundamental resource that will help in bridging our educational deficiency.”
Scholarships amounts can be up to $1000.00 and are subject to availability of funds. Short-term educational loans, not to exceed $500.00 will also be available. The scholarship funds will become effective before the end of the year.
The Cabazon Band of Mission Indians is a federally recognized Indian tribe with approximately 1,610 acres of reservation land in the Coachella Valley. The Tribe owns several business enterprises including Fantasy Springs Resort Casino. Goals include growing and diversifying its business ventures to increase employment in the Coachella Valley, increasing the support of community programs, continuing to pursue economic self-sufficiency and preserving and educating the public about Cabazon culture.
