How do you play this video poker hand?

12 August 2017

By Jerry Stickman

Hi Jerry,

How are you? I hope you are well.

This is Jody. It has been awhile since I contacted you.

I just have one question for you here: How would you play the following sample?

6s, 4s, 2s, 8d, 7d? Would you hold anything here or scrap the whole hand and re-deal five cards?

I appreciate your time and look forward to hearing from you.

Thanks again,
Jody

Hi Jody,

I would be happy to answer your question. There is one minor problem, however. You did not tell me which game you are playing and it makes a difference. I am assuming you are playing a Jacks or Better type game (Jacks or Better, Bonus Poker, Double Bonus Poker, Double-Double Bonus Poker, etc.) and not Deuces Wild. If that is the case, you would hold the three spades (6s, 4s, 2s) in order to get a shot at a straight flush, flush, straight, three-of-a-kind or two pair.

If, however, you were playing Deuces Wild, you would save all five cards as they make a straight (4s, 2s, 6s, 7d, 8d).

I am not sure if you are aware of it or not, but each different game such as Jacks or Better, Bonus Poker, etc. will have a different playing strategy. In fact, it is also often true that each different pay table for the same game has a different playing strategy. If you are playing several different types of games or even different pay tables for the same game, you should not use the same playing strategy.

Most people have one or two types of video poker games that they enjoy playing. It could be Jacks or Better, or Double Double Bonus Poker. It could be Deuces Wild, or Jokers Wild. Whatever gave you enjoy playing, you should play it as close to perfect as possible. In this way, you will minimize your losses and maximize the number of winning sessions.

Many people (perhaps you) play by intuition. They try to reason out what the proper hold is. They may be correct in many, if not most, circumstances. However, to make sure to are playing the absolute best way possible, I highly recommend you invest in some sort of video poker strategy.

For some of the most common games, preprinted strategy cards are available from gaming stores. If you like to try different game, however and you tend to play regularly, it makes sense to invest in a video poker strategy computer program. There are even some apps available for a smartphone that can give you the proper strategy for many popular games and pay tables.

Once you get your strategy cards (or print them from a video poker program or app) you should study the card. Memorize it as best you can. When you are in a casino, you can refer to it if you are unsure of the proper hold.

Only in this way will you get the most out of your video poker play.

May all your wins be swift and large and all your losses slow and tiny.
