The Reel Life: Scandinavian democracy edition

19 October 2017

If you are Extremely Online (as we are; it's a hazard of the job), you might remember the furor that erupted way back in spring 2016—centuries ago, in internet years—when the U.K. inexplicably decided to crowdsource the name of a new research ship.

People being people, and being extra absurd when the internet's involved, voted to name the new ship Boaty McBoatface. The elite gatekeepers at the National Environmental Research Council genteely decided to take the internet's preferences under advisement, where they were politely rejected, and the new ship was named the Sir David Attenborough, leading many U.K. residents to doubt the Research Council's commitment to democracy.

Sweden, which is naming a new line of trains, would like you all to know that it is extremely and steadfastly committed to democracy. The Swedish transport company MTR Express decided to crowdsource the naming of its trains, despite the absolutely inevitable result that one of them would end up being named Trainy McTrainface. Indeed, the internet did exactly what we suspected it would, and Trainy McTrainface was far and away the most popular suggested name.

The people had spoken. But would the transit corporations listen?

Fortuately, the answer was yes. "I can guarantee with my life that the train will be called Trainy McTrainface," said a spokesman for MTR Express.

The will of the people has been upheld, and Trainy McTrainface was named in an official naming ceremony on Tuesday.
