A Menace to the Casinos

6 January 2022

CINDY: A new year is here!

ABBY: Are you really that excited about it?

CINDY: Well, we do have a week in Vegas to celebrate that we made it through another year. I mean each year…

ABBY: Each day…

CINDY: Each hour…

ABBY: Minute, second, breath.

CINDY: Happy New Year! I get it. New Years is a great moment; not for any reason other than the fact that you can stand up and say, “Happy New Year!” It puts a cap of what happened in the past, even in the immediate past, and gears us for the future; meaning whatever that future is, we will be there, at least hopefully.

ABBY: A pre-Vegas thought process is a kind of Happy New Year too. We are celebrating a new year in a new adventure. Vegas will be an adventure as just about all of our trips to the casinos are adventures, one way or another.

CINDY: I hear you. Okay, what is the proper thought process for our coming trip? I mean we have been to Vegas a million times, right? What is the mental preparation? Do we need any?

ABBY: True, a million times. Still, Vegas is the capital of casino play. We have been home for a few weeks now, holidays, family visits and the like. We are raring to go. We have been to Atlantic City about a month ago…

CINDY: Six whole weeks!

ABBY: Six weeks. Long time.

CINDY: I have an important part of the thought process. Give yourself the order not to rush into playing right away. Don’t get off the plane and zip to the casino and start playing right off the bat. Maybe we check in, take a nap, go down and have a coffee. Get our hearts beating regularly. We don’t want to play in any excited way.

ABBY: That’s easier said than done.

CINDY: True.

ABBY: Fighting your own inclinations can be very hard to do.

CINDY: But it is the first and maybe one of the two most important steps in learning to be a good player. If you can’t control your emotions those emotions can do you in almost as much as the house edge at the games. Maybe more because you might find yourself unable to quit play for a session or a trip even.

ABBY: Casino gambling is an amazing emotional experience. It is similar to being a sports fan and going to your favorite team’s game. Say even a playoff game. Things pump inside you. Go to the game; get drunk, make a fool of yourself. You don’t even remember the game fully. And look at how much money you spent. You let the occasion get the best of you and then the occasion was not so much fun after all.

CINDY: We keep ourselves in check. We will be there for a week. How many people who don’t live in Vegas can go there for a week of fun and play? Not too many.

ABBY: I want to remember the week. I want to become the menace to the casinos!

CINDY: Absolutely.
