Chickens Not Hatching

26 July 2022

By Frank Scoblete

There is a lot of truth in old sayings and perhaps even more truth the older those sayings are. How’s this one? “Don’t count your chickens before they are hatched.”

Sounds reasonable. You’ve got yourself all set up for a great load of flying feathers and hundreds of eggs about to descend on your life in a good way. Things are looking good for your future, aren’t they?

But suddenly none of it happens.

Captain Fox has decided he can get into the chicken coop and goodbye chickens and their future eggs. Life can be summed up as “You never know for sure.”

The future is always a mixture of hope and uncertainty. Just think of all the marriages that started off with smiles and happiness that then ended in bitter divorce and child custody disputes. The happy chickens in those events never lived all that long. The future hatched something else altogether. The eggs were smashed too.

Casino futures for most players will follow this script too. But the script can even be tougher because the end result, your ultimate loss of your money to the casinos’ house edges on all the games is known in advance.

It is not known whether the ultimate negativity will be this trip, the next trip, or somewhere in the far future. Think of going to a wedding and knowing this particular couple will ultimately split up. You just don’t know the actual “when” of it.

The good times are certainly good. You have had a great trip. You’ve won a lot of money from the temples of chance. Now what? Make plans to go back as soon as possible to continue the hot streak which must continue, right?

Perhaps, you could decide to bet lower amounts so that your wins of the last trip might make the next trip a pleasant one too? Nah! That would mean if things are still going well, you’d win less money than before. Why do that? Makes no sense. You want the money to keep flowing in – just like the chickens and eggs of the farmer’s future luck.

So, just like that sad farmer, you are counting your chickens before they have hatched and you soon find that nothing much has actually hatched at all. No chickens. No eggs. Just disappointment.

Now, give this some thought: How many casino players find themselves in the situation where they are wishing those chickens hatched, but instead the feathery creatures didn’t spring into existence at all?

When you go up against the house edges of the various games you must understand that maybe in the short run or medium run or long run, those chickens have a very precarious future.

For the casino player rational thinking must predominate their intellectual life. Casino play is not something on which a player bases the future expectations.

Every casino player should memorize this statement: “Don’t count your chickens before they are hatched.”

All the best in and out of the chicken coop!
