Comps and Players' Clubs

16 June 2022

CINDY: Here goes: Comps! Comps! Comps! Comps!

ABBY: I’ll do you one better: Players’ Clubs! Players’ Clubs! Players’ Clubs! Players’ Clubs! Players’ Clubs!

CINDY: I guess our readers know where we are going with this article.

ABBY: Yep, comps and players’ clubs. These are very strong elements of casino play for a majority of the players.

CINDY: I have been reading on some social media cites from players who seem to be obsessed with getting comps from the casinos. They play as if the comps are what they are playing for and not the money that they bring to the casino. They brag about their comps! They have no idea that the comps they are getting for “free” are actually paid for by their expected and ultimately very real losses.

ABBY: Yes, the thought that comps are free has nothing to do with reality. The comps are just like coupons for some discounts at the grocery store. They are just factored into the games. They are inducements to play. Nothing more; nothing less.

CINDY: As far as comps go; just play your games properly and for the amount of money you can really afford and whatever comps come, they come. Don’t even think about them. They shouldn’t exist in your mind. A person playing a hundred dollars a hand at blackjack will get more in comps than a person playing ten dollars a hand. The comps have nothing to do with anything other than how much money you play for.

ABBY: I have heard some of my slot player acquaintances brag about the free rooms they get and the meals for just putting money in the machines. What! The only thing hungrier than those players for comps are those machines gobbling their credit slips. Caution in play is the key word for all of us. Any other mindset is bad for the player and good for the casino.

CINDY: Now you brought up the players’ clubs. What about those? Are some players really into players’ clubs?

ABBY: Yes, the players’ clubs are the next step up from comps. You get enough comps and you enter the players’ club at some level. That is based on your average bet and how long you play. These are perfectly geared by the casinos to intrigue the individual player’s sense of self. The levels the casinos have created for their players’ clubs are the new caste systems. Where you fall, be you silver, gold, platinum or whatever other levels exist tell you who you are to the casino. For some players it tells them where they are in the scheme of things.

CINDY: I have seen bragging fights of players telling other players where they fall on the caste lines, so to speak. “I’m at this level!” “Oh, yeah, well, I’m at that level!” “So what? My wife can beat you both!”

ABBY: The casinos are an efficient machine in how they handle their players’ emotions.

CINDY: Abby and I love going to the casinos. We’ve been going for decades. But you still must know how they manipulate you. That’s par for the course. Knowledge is power – power over yourself!

ABBY: True.
