Craps Attack

21 September 2021

By Frank Scoblete

My columns about one-shot craps and the best bets in the casino this year have engendered quite a bit of controversy. Here are some readers’ opinions:

MANNY: You’ve gone off the deep end with this one bet at craps idea. What’s the point? I enjoy having plenty of bets out because then I am always in the action. That’s the point of craps isn’t it, having bets out and cheering that they be made? That one-bet idea just doesn’t work for me.

ROB: I asked a box man what he thought of your so-called one-bet idea and he said it was nuts. He should know, right? After all he works in the casino and sees thousands of games. I just find the whole idea to be stupid. I like your writing but this idea is stupid. Casino people give the best advice because they are the true experts. I was also told by the box man that I wouldn’t get much in comps if I played the one-bet way. That’s it for me.

JOHN: You are on to something Mr. Scoblete with this one-bet philosophy. How stupid is it to put up a whole bunch of bets when the total money is being whipped by the house edge on each bet? I have been trying it and I like it. I can say it did take me some time to not get all wound up when other numbers were hitting but after a while I didn’t think about other numbers, only the number I was on. I can’t see playing any other way.

DONALD: Pass line, come, pass line, come, put up the odds, put up the odds. Is that all there is to a game that has maybe a hundred different bets? What about place bets and hardways and all the other fun bets? You can’t win a bundle if you don’t bet it up. That’s my philosophy. People might listen to you but I know in my heart that I am right.

HAROLD: One bet? I tried it. It took me several days before I could ignore the other numbers that were hitting. I actually made a little money even though my comps were lower than in the past. But in the past, I was a wild player and I lost a lot of money; a lot more than I got in comps, I can tell you. I am going to stick to your idea. It’s the first new idea in craps that I can remember. Bravo!

PAULIE: First you had this controlled shooting idea and now you have the one-bet idea; what’s next? The first one is almost impossible to do because I tried it. I couldn’t even set the dice because the box man busted my chops. He kept telling me that I was taking too long. It’s not easy trying to see where the dots are on the dice. Then I tried the one-bet thing and my friend thought I was an idiot. I went back to my regular way of playing and that satisfied me. A few hardways, some C&Es, only place and buy bets and some others. I felt I was in the groove even though I lost. I enjoy your writing but seriously.

NICK: I’m onboard. Count me in. I gave the one-bet solution a try in a two-day trip and my losses were almost not there. I even got some comps. I played it exactly as you said and I only made the pass line or come bets. One bet only. I just ignored the other numbers that were rolled. I even listened to the numbers shouted out at another table and came to the realization as you said it that no numbers but the 7 and the one number I was on counted. I like this method of play very much.

All the best in and out of the casinos!
