"I Can’t Get No Satisfaction!"

22 September 2020

By Frank Scoblete

For crying out loud stop your crying out loud!

Don’t you understand that the rest of us are coming to the casino and, whether we win or whether we lose, we are not there to burden the other players with our whines and complaints when bad times hit.

I think the Rolling Stones said it best in their song Satisfaction which pounded the nail into the wood when they sang “I can’t get no satisfaction.” Despite the double-negative (“can’t” and “no”) listeners clearly got the negative thrust of the song. Sometimes things just don’t work out.

We casino players get the meaning as well when you keep moaning about your losses. When you get your dander up and stomp around, we look askance at you. Many of us just try to ignore you. Some of us just walk away, perhaps shaking out heads.

When you blame the dealer or the machine for going out of their way to purposely make just you lose, we roll our eyes. When you expect the rest of us to give a damn about your sorry state during this session, or this day, or this night, or your entire casino playing career; do not be surprised that we almost wish you will continue to get hammered. You are so annoying that we might lose all our sympathy.

Everyone loses at times, bub. You are not an exception. We all play against the house edge at whatever game we play and over time many casino gamblers feel like crying into their spilled milk. That’s natural. But most do not do that because to do so is uncivilized; it’s childish. Yes, we might whine (quietly) in our rooms if we are staying in the hotel.

If you do not like to lose (and no one likes losing, correct?) that is understandable. But no one wants to listen to your endless litany of complaints.

If you cannot handle losing with some class – then don’t play the games. Go to a movie; go to live theatre; go to a sporting event. (Just don’t whine in a theatre unless you’re supposed to.) No one is forcing you to play casino games. The ups and downs are all a part of the process. You don’t like the process then don’t play.

I sometimes wonder why people act ridiculously infantile in casinos. The stakes, the odds, the payouts, in fact, everything is available to any player who wants to read a little about the games. Players should fully understand what they are facing and what they are doing. It’s not as if the world thinks casino games can be regularly beaten; so why do you whine when you should fully know what’s happening?

So, please, I ask this as politely as I can – shut up.

All the best in and out of the casinos!
