i Eat Therefore I Am

CINDY: Buffets are the way to a blubbery hell.

ABBY: Oh, I agree. Today’s buffets, at the casinos that are still offering them that is, are wonders of encouraging everyone to overeat like crazy.

CINDY: It isn’t just that you can eat as much as you want, it’s that the food is a source of pleasure. Piling your plate full of everything you can slop on it, can make up for losses at the games or it can celebrate the fact that you are ahead of the casino. Either way, eating copious amounts of food signals something good whether things have been bad or whether things have been good in the games. Food is good in and of itself.

ABBY: Of course, some people just like to eat. That’s me. I have to restrain myself at the buffets. I am much better at that now than I was when I first went to the buffets.

CINDY: One of the big things that happened at the buffets in the late 1980s and early 1990s was making different areas for different ethnic foods. I remember Las Vegas’s Rio Casino buffet doing that. You had food in different sections from all over the world. Now most bigger buffets cater to tastes from all over the planet. It’s hard not to overeat.

ABBY: I certainly packed on the pounds when we stayed there. I had to eat some of every food from every corner of the world or I was being left out of something. That was my obligation to the people of the world when I was at the buffet. It seemed as if I were insulting a culture if I didn’t down amazing amounts of their food! I was a loyal eater. I considered that a salute to the folks of planet earth.

CINDY: Kidding aside, it almost felt like that. How could you pass up so many delightful delicacies piled on your plates? And it was plates full, not little portions on one plate or another. Eating was not a sampling but an orgy of food. Do you know how much weight we gained in our early days at the casinos? I don’t even want to think about it now.

ABBY: Gaining weight is so easy. Just eat and do nothing else, just play the casino games. What could be better? Just plop your blubbery self down into a chair at a table game or at a slot machine and stay until hunger drove you back to the buffet to eat some more. You’d have to launch yourself up from the chair and that was your exercise for the day.

CINDY: Just pushing yourself up was like weight lifting.

ABBY: Gaining weight is just so easy. Just eat too much and do too little. It’s effortless. Takes no will power. How hard is it to open your mouth and shovel food into it? Then swallow and repeat the process.

CINDY: It took me almost two years to lose the weight I gained as a casino player.

ABBY: Me too. Actually, more than two years.

CINDY: Do you blame the casinos? Are they forcing you to sin?

ABBY: Not at all. These establishments exist to give us pleasure but it is our own choice as to how we will handle everything. A pit boss doesn’t grab you and forcibly pry open your mouth and force you to eat like a hippo. That’s your decision. No one else’s decision. You put the food on your plate.

CINDY: Now, it is not a problem. We don’t have a problem with overeating anymore.

ABBY: No, we don’t.

CINDY: Thankfully!
