Slow Down, You Move Too Fast

You are driving your brand-new car; the car you have always wanted to drive. Now you own it! All that hard work you have done got you the necessary money to pay for that beautiful car.

Life’s been good.

Why not test out some speed on this baby? You press down on the accelerator. This car is now flying. Unfortunately, you don’t see the thick, brick wall that suddenly exists in the road. The wall you are zooming towards with incredible speed.

At the speed you are traveling, you just can’t survive the hit. Bam! Goodbye car and goodbye you.

Obviously, I wouldn’t wish such a fate on anyone, in a new car, in an old car, in any car or vehicle for that matter; but I use the car example as a powerful image that can relate directly to casino playing. This is an image that should always be in our consciousness; it is that important.

Casino players tend to play way too fast. Many might start off slow, taking their time playing a slot machine or putting money up at a table game such as roulette or craps or mini-baccarat. But as time passes at these games, the player is the equivalent of that car speeding towards that thick brick wall.

The brick wall of casino play is the house edge which the casinos have established at every game they offer. That edge will grind away at your bankroll over time. Yes, just like a speeder on a road, most days will be pleasant, with the theoretical wind in your hair. You’ll win some; you’ll lose some, no seeming harm done. But the faster you play, the more decisions you face, then that edge becomes more and more difficult to defeat. Your playing speed won’t kill you but it can kill your bankroll.

And there is no reason whatsoever to speed up your game because you get nothing for doing that. It is a waste of time and money. One can thoroughly enjoy the casino experience as a leisurely drive. The faster you drive the less you notice the scenery.

Okay, some players might make the argument that they will get more in comps if they play faster and they are probably right. Sadly, they are then paying for those comps. Comps are not free; they are based on your theoretical losses. Play faster? Lose more. Get some extra comps. So what? The faster you drive, the more gas you must use and pay for.

I have noticed this speed factor watching players in my over three decades of casino play. It seems to be a natural progression for players to go from relaxed play to fast and then perhaps even super-fast play. You can really see this phenomenon at the slots. Some players will play like lightning after even a short while of relaxed play.

There is speed and its equivalent, multiple bets at certain games. Roulette and craps come to mind in this regard. Players often feel the need to make many bets at those two games. This is “speed” of a different sort. The more bets you make at a game, the more you are actually speeding towards the negative effects of the house edge.

So, keep it slow and enjoy the scenery.

All the best in and out of the casinos!
