The Martingale: Yes, or No?

CINDY: Thank you so much.

ABBY: You’re welcome.

CINDY: But now we have to explain why this system should be avoided at all times as it costs you an arm and a leg and maybe your whole bankroll if you go the route with it. I went the route once and I will never forget it. It was devastating.

ABBY: I think most casino players when they are starting out will play the Martingale or their version of it. I think just about all of them do get burned by it and realize sooner or later that the system is a fool’s errand. Maybe some players just stick with it even if they do get burned from time to time. You never know.

CINDY: At first the Martingale does seem sensible.

ABBY: Yes, it does.

CINDY: You bet $10 and you lose, so you increase the bet to $20 to make up for the loss and win that original $10. But if you lose that $20 then you go to $40 to win that initial $10. If you lose that you go to $80 to win that $10.

ABBY: Now you see what’s happening. The losing streak is costing you a lot of money as you keep doubling after a loss. After $80, you now go to $160. This bet in order to win $10. Then you lose that and you pump out $360 – to win a mere $10. If it is a $10 table, you might not be allowed to go to $720 on the next bet.

CINDY: How often will such a streak happen that will wipe you off the board? Not too often but you just need one to nail you to the wall. And remember, you are risking all that money to win a mere $10 or whatever your starting bet is.

ABBY: Some players will limit the Martingale to a few steps. What about that technique?

CINDY: Ultimately, it doesn’t matter. The results will be the same. You can get to the limit much faster if that limit is not too high. The losses will mount up no matter what and you will hit the BIG wall or the little walls – but you will hit them! You can’t beat the casinos using any betting system but some systems are extremely dangerous and that is the Martingale. By the way, no one really knows where this system started or who started it.

ABBY: The logic of the system is very attractive. You can’t lose so many hands in a row can you? That seems impossible. You play it and it looks pretty good for awhile but, yes, sooner or later you hit the house limit on your bets. It could happen sooner but it will happen. You will drain your money and you will feel drained yourself.

CINDY: Take our advice and avoid this system. It isn’t worth the anguish.

ABBY: Agreed.
