The Toughest Question

25 November 2021

By Royal Flushes

ABBY: We have both answered many questions about casino games and casino gambling in general.

CINDY: Yes, we have.

ABBY: What was the hardest question you were ever asked in terms of how hard it was for you to formulate an answer?

CINDY: I think it was a lady who asked a very simple question that caused me to really think hard about the answer. Here’s the question: “Why do you play casino games when you know that in the long run you can’t win because the casino has stacked the decks against you with their house edges?”

ABBY: A simple question, yes. What was your answer?

CINDY: First I was silent. Then I thought, “Why do we play such games? In the long run you can’t win, except maybe if you hit some million-dollar jackpot on a slot machine.”

ABBY: And that won’t happen to anyone but a handful of people. Continue.

CINDY: How can a game be exciting if you know you must lose the longer you play the game? Of course, a person could come to a casino once or a couple of times and be ahead and then quit but that wasn’t really what the question was about. It was for those of us who make casino gambling a big part of their lives. Why do we do it?

ABBY: Did you come up with an answer?

CINDY: Kind of. I don’t think I really settled the case. Here is how I approached it. If you approach any professional sport there are going to be winning teams and losing teams. In professional sports a losing team doesn’t stop playing. It tries various ways to win. In a given season this doesn’t usually happen, at least not often. So why don’t they just stop playing?

ABBY: Good question. But they are getting paid to play.

CINDY: No analogy holds up all the way. I therefore continued. I look at our games against the casino as if we are the underdogs that on occasion can wrest victory for ourselves. We aren’t getting paid the way a professional but losing athlete is getting paid. That is true. Still, the atmosphere in the casino can be electric and that adds much excitement to the games for the underdog players. We players can thrive on that excitement.

ABBY: I think many of us do.

CINDY: Knowing you are the underdog does not stop us from attempting to win. When the first-place team plays the last-place team that last-place team still tries to win. In fact, in all professional sports where the season has some length, there aren’t teams that go undefeated for a whole season. Some of their defeats come at the hands of the last-place or near to last-place teams.

ABBY: And some of us have had the satisfaction of beating the casinos at times. The better the strategies you use, the better the chance that you will win. That we know just from analyzing the math of the games. Every casino player can get this knowledge if they want to.

CINDY: Many don’t care to do that. Now there is a good question to ask. Why don’t all casino players want to give themselves the best chances to win?

ABBY: They are kind of like that team that threw the World Series at the start of the 20th Century. Yes, we are underdogs but we can be close underdogs or players with just about no chance to win.

CINDY: Well, maybe we should ask that question of those casino players.

ABBY: Maybe.
