This Week in Gambling: News out of several US states

23 June 2022

This week's gambling news finds states still pushing to get sports betting and online gambling passed this year. We discuss last minute Massachusetts sports betting work, Maryland online sports betting, recent Ohio sports betting news, and the push for North Carolina sports betting and online gambling. Plus, we're in Las Vegas this week filming on The Strip and at the World Series of Poker.

It’s down to the wire for Massachusetts sports betting this year. And while several key issues seem to make the passage of any legislation unlikely, the odds are no where near zero. Both the State Senate and House have passed bills, but the differences between them will have to be resolved before July 31st. Key differences between the competing bills revolve around betting on college games, the tax rate for operators, advertising restrictions, and the how many mobile licenses will be issued.

Wagering on sporting events may be legal, but Maryland online sports betting is what residents have really been waiting for. And now, with the help of their Governor, they may get their wish by this fall. Yes, Governor Larry Hogan has actually been pushing a a state committee forward in hopes they could get a mobile sports betting agreement in place before the kickoff of this years NFL season. And as states all around Maryland launch mobile betting, frustrations grow with the Governor and state residents.

Well, Ohio sports betting will not be up and running in time for the start of this year’s NFL season. But take heart, because folks there will still be able to bet on next year’s Super Bowl. This according to the Ohio Casino Control Commission. The Commission’s Executive Director, Matthew Schuler, says that 1 January 2023, will be the day that Ohio sports betting will officially start. When it does, it will be the single largest simultaneous launch of a sports betting market in the United States.
