Those Bad Times

ABBY: We’ve been playing in the casinos for a long time, haven’t we?

CINDY: Yes, from a time way back, when you rarely if ever saw a woman at the craps tables. Men let it be known they didn’t want women playing craps with them. Women tended to be relegated to the slot machines. We’re now breaking out. A little bit anyway. I see more and more women giving craps a try. We are still a small percentage but at least we are a percentage.

ABBY: Now, in all these years – decades – what have been some of our horrible times in the casinos? We’ve had a lot of good times and great times but not every time is superior in a great way. The worst of the worst?

CINDY: I remember the time we were playing roulette and I was betting the “red” proposition and I lost several in a row, and then I decided to switch things and I bet “black” and “red” hit several times, so I switched again. I didn’t win once. I must have made a dozen bets. Then you came over and said, “Cindy, you bet ‘red’ and I’ll bet ‘black.’ We have to win one. We’ll split the money!”

ABBY: And the stupid ball landed on the double-zero and we lost both bets!

CINDY: I was glad that I wasn’t betting the Martingale. I would have lost a fortune.

ABBY: In case the readers don’t know, the Martingale system is the doubling your bet after each loss with the hope you’ll win one in your string of bets. If you can’t bet any higher you lose and that loss is for a lot of money.

CINDY: You almost killed someone at the craps table if I recall.

ABBY: Just blinded the poor man.. The dice stuck to my hand as I was throwing them and I hit the stickman in the eyes. Well, one eye. He was wearing glasses and they went right into them and stuck between the stickman’s glasses and his eye. He screamed and there was a small cut on his eyelid.

CINDY: There was a funny boxman. He called out, “No comps for you young lady!” The only one who didn’t laugh was the stickman.

ABBY: I wasn’t laughing.

CINDY: I was.

ABBY: You had a great blackjack run if I recall.

CINDY: Did I lose maybe twenty hands in a row? It certainly felt like that. I even pushed on my blackjacks and had to settle for those as if they were some kinds of wins because things were going that bad. I think I got two of them in that losing streak. It almost felt as if the dealer had magic. I just saw hand after hand going against me. The worst thing was that my double downs, and there seemed to be many of those, were all losses and made up maybe half of my hands. Even the dealer told me I should quit.

ABBY: I told you to quit too.

CINDY: And I quit. I think that’s the worst losing streak I ever had.

ABBY: You play casino games, and it doesn’t matter what games, and you will have good times and bad times. You have to realize that. If you don’t you can become depressed during the bad times and way too elated during the good times. You have to keep your calm.

CINDY: Easier said than done, especially when you are first going to the casinos.

ABBY: I am good at giving advice even if I don’t always follow it.
