We Get Letters

31 October 2024

By Royal Flushes

CINDY: Do you remember the old Perry Como show?

ABBY: It is a tickle way in the back of my brain.

CINDY: The show opened with Perry getting letters with this song “we get letters, batch and batch of letters, Dear Perry,” sing something for us!

ABBY: I’m not singing.

CINDY I am not even sure Perry sang anything.

ABBY: And the point is?

CINDY: Well, we have gotten emails from people and people have asked us questions in the casinos from time to time so why don’t we answer them?

ABBY: We have answered them face to face when we are asked something or other.

CINDY: In our column!

ABBY: Oh, yes, I see. You think we should occasionally answer questions we’ve been asked?

CINDY: Exactly.

ABBY: Sounds good. Which questions do you want us to answer first?

CINDY: Well, we have been writing about blackjack, why not a few of those?

ABBY: Okay, why not start with the hardest game why don’t you?

CINDY: A man named Benny…

ABBY: We never got a question from a man named Benny.

CINDY: We need to identify him.

ABBY: We don’t even know the guy’s identity. How do we name him then?

CINDY: We invent the name, that’s how we do it.

ABBY: We’re going to be inventing many names for this since we never wrote down the names of the people who have ask you or me or us questions. That can get difficult can’t it?

CINDY: Well, we’ve changed names in the past. Right? I mean we don’t actually identify people by their real names right?

ABBY: But that just feels different. I don’t know. Inventing a name seems more real I guess if you are inventing a name based on somebody’s name.

CINDY: Are you listening to yourself?

ABBY: Are you?

CINDY: Okay, okay, we can just go with, like, here is question number one. We could go with that, yes?

ABBY: Write first question? I don’t know. That could seem too impersonal. Here is our first question…I don’t know.

CINDY: First of all, we really aren’t getting letters are we? Like a text or something and sometimes the texter doesn’t really give us much information about him or herself.

ABBY: No, but still.

CINDY: Still? Still, what, I ask?

ABBY: This is supposed to be something between us and our readers, right?

CINDY: Follow through on that.

ABBY: So, when someone asks a question we should ask that someone who he or she is. Shouldn’t we? Right now, we don’t have any names.

CINDY: Care to go to the casino tonight? We can dig up some names there.

ABBY: Sounds good.
