Why Are These the Most Popular?

CINDY: If you have been in a casino even once, you can’t doubt that slot machines rule the landscape. In the big casinos there can be hundreds if not thousands of them. We know they make the most money for the house – by far and away too. Somewhere between 65 and 90 percent of a given casino’s income can come from those machines.

ABBY: But on the table games, blackjack reigns supreme with about 10 percent of the casino players wedded to it. The question now is this: Why are these two games the most popular? What sets them apart from the other games? How come, for example, video poker, a machine game too, just doesn’t have the huge crowds playing it. Isn’t a machine just a machine? Or is there something fundamentally different between slot machines and video poker machines?

CINDY: And craps and roulette are far behind blackjack in the table-game world. What’s the difference between blackjack and all those other games?

ABBY: Here is my opinion. Slot machines appeal to the dreamers. Even relatively low-paying machines offer jackpots that are impressive. Other machines offer jackpots that are stunning. I mean you can go into the hundreds of thousands and even the million dollars as a big win on select machines. These machines are similar to the lottery jackpots. They are the stuff of dreams. Even the smaller payouts are the stuff of dreams.

CINDY: I buy that and I also buy the fact that you really don’t need any skill to play them. You put in your credits and you play for as long or short as you want to. You only have to decide what denomination to play. I think it is an easy “dream” that requires no work on the part of the player.

ABBY: Video poker, to be played properly, means you have to research and study the game you want to play. That is work; even if you bring a playing card. You have to always ask yourself, “What do I do with this hand?” And the big jackpots, the royal flush ones, aren’t so big that you have fantasies about them. I doubt anyone’s life changes because of a royal flush. Fun, yes. Fantasy? No.

CINDY: I think the people who play blackjack are just the opposite of slot-machine players. You can’t make a killing on one hand at blackjack. The most you can do, if the casino allows it, is split pairs and double after splits.

Let’s say you are betting $10. You split your pair and now you have $20 riding on the hand but each hand you can double on because of the cards you received. You have another $20 out there. You have a grand total of $40 being bet on the decision.

ABBY: I don’t see any fantasies there. None at all.

CINDY: The blackjack players are interested in how they play the hands against the dealer’s up-card. It is a skill game because of the “choice” feature. It is far more like video poker than slot machines.

ABBY: The games of craps and roulette are far more like slot machines. They are strictly random but they do have wagers that come in with big payouts.

CINDY: The house edges on those particular bets are high, much higher than the house edge at blackjack if blackjack is played correctly.

ABYY: Bottom line is that skill counts more at blackjack and not at all on slot machines.

CINDY: And that is the bottom line!
