Winning is the most fun

13 December 2016

By Frank Scoblete

A quarter century ago I coined the phrase “Winning is the most fun!” I thought it fit the casino experience for almost all players. Seriously, why play casino games if you didn’t give yourself a chance to win? But I was probably not right in my assumption.

I now know that many gamblers just enjoy the sheer act of playing; it does something for them, perhaps gives them some internal thrill whether they win or lose. But that is not me. I play to win. If I lose I am not happy – as in NOT HAPPY.

After so many years in the casinos watching, talking and playing with players of all stripes and denominations, I do understand why gamblers enjoy the sheer act of gambling. It is a contest for them; it is visceral, kind of like amateur sports for the diehard player. Sure you compete, maybe even fiercely, but win or lose, you’ll come back for some more quite soon. You aren’t playing for the money; you are playing for the joy of playing.

I do think some gamblers make a big mistake in the games they choose to play and how they choose to play them. For example, blackjack players who do not play “basic strategy” (which is the computerized analysis of how to play every hand you get against the dealer’s up card); these players are giving the house a greater edge than necessary. Sure, have fun playing for the sheer act of playing, but using the correct basic strategy will allow you such fun and it will also give you the best shot at winning. Why not take that shot?

Craps players are notoriously poor gamblers. Most craps players are what the casinos call “action players,” which means they crave many bets that have big payouts. These bets are some of the worst bets in the casino. It is quite interesting, and enlightening, that craps also has some of the best bets in the casino. Why players would choose inferior bets puzzles me but, once again, most are not following my dictum that “winning is the most fun!” Such “action players” are usually losing players as in BIG losing players.

The same holds true for slots. We now know that progressive machines tend to be tighter than non-progressive machines. We know that playing full coin only reduces the house edge by a fraction but increases the amount three or more fold. Why not play machines that are better than the other machines? In fact, why not play some good video poker games where the house edge can hover at about 1%?

Those of you reading this know whether you are a gambler looking for “action” or a serious player looking to win. Playing the best games with the best strategies offers us a chance at winning and that should be (in my opinion) the reason to play. Come on folks, memorize this: “Winning is the most fun!”
