(PRESS RELEASE) -- Stake, the world's largest online casino and sportsbook, is officially coming to Alberta after Stake Canada Ltd. secured a license from the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission. The move brings one of online gaming and sport entertainment’s biggest and most culturally recognized brands to Alberta’s newly regulated iGaming market.
Since launching in 2017, Stake has grown from an online gaming disruptor into one of the industry’s largest brands. Alberta becomes the latest addition to Stake's expanding regulated-market footprint, following recent growth across Europe and Latin America.
Alberta's competitive iGaming market presents a significant opportunity to bring the Stake experience to an established and highly engaged sports and gaming audience. From the popularity of major 50/50 draws to the province's long-standing land-based casino industry, gaming already has a significant presence across Alberta's entertainment landscape.
Kris Abbott, Country Manager at Stake Canada, said: "Stake has built one of the world's most recognizable brands in online gaming by doing things differently. We move faster, we build bigger and we create an entertainment experience that genuinely shapes internet and sports culture.
“Our planned entry into Alberta represents an exciting milestone step for us in Canada – we are not here to blend in. We are here to raise the bar and bring the distinctive Stake experience to Alberta’s highly engaged player audience."
With this license, Stake's continues expansion into regulated local markets, with operations now spanning Italy and Denmark in Europe, as well as Mexico, Colombia, Peru and Argentina in Latin America. The Alberta license represents a further step in the company's strategy to combine its global scale and technology with locally licensed operations tailored to individual markets.
"Stake Canada’s approach to regulated market-entry is grounded in preparation, accountability and a long-term commitment to compliance,” said Birgitte Sand, board member at Stake Canada. “Securing licensing in Alberta provides a strong foundation for the company’s development in Canada and reflects the importance we place on meeting local standards and player safety. We commend the Alberta government, the AGLC and the AiGC for their work to establish Alberta’s regulated iGaming framework.”
Stake has built its global identity by combining online gaming with major sports, entertainment and creator partnerships, alongside original content and experiences designed to engage audiences beyond the traditional betting environment.
Once launched, Stake Canada's Alberta platform will operate in accordance with AGLC standards and provide a comprehensive suite of responsible gaming and player protection measures.
Subject to executing an Operating Agreement with the Alberta iGaming Corporation (AiGC), Stake Canada expects to become fully operational on 12 October 2026.
